SAN DIEGO — The University of Colorado women’s tennis team advanced both doubles teams and Aya El Sayed through to the next round here Thursday on the opening day of the San Diego Intercollegiate Championships.
El Sayed, fresh off a consolation tournament victory at the Battle In The Bay Classic, advanced out of the round of 32 with a two set victory over Katya Townsend of Utah. The junior took both sets by a score of 6-2. She is set to play the fifth-seeded Sofia Rojas of Oklahoma State tomorrow in the round of 16.
This wasn’t the only victory over Townsend for El Sayed. She joined up with Antonia Balzert in the doubles round of 32 and downed Townsend and her partner 6-3 in the opening round of doubles. Mila Stanojevic and Elys Ventura were awarded a bye, sending both CU doubles teams into the round of 16.
El Sayed will have two days in a row of doubling down on opponents, facing Rojas in both the singles and doubles where Oklahoma State’s tandem is seeded fourth.
Balzert finished the day out for Colorado in a tough battle with Marisa Schmidt of Iowa. Schmidt took the opening set 6-2, then Balzert battled to a 7-6(3) victory to force a third set. In the third set, Balzert fell 6-4.
Ventura and Stanojevic both competed in singles matches with Ventura falling to USC’s Isabelle Lee, the eighth-seeded opponent in the tournament. She fell by a pair of 6-3 sets. Stanojevic dropped her match against Dariya Detkovskaya of Oklahoma State 6-1, 6-0.
The Buffaloes continue action tomorrow in the San Diego tournament, while their teammates open play in the Jon Messick Invitational at CSU tomorrow morning.
