Women’s Tennis Earns 4-1 Win Over Rutgers

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 71 Penn State women’s tennis team (11-11, 5-5 B1G) took down conference opponent Rutgers (5-16, 0-10 B1G) in a 4-1 result at the Sarni Tennis Center on Friday evening. 

“I’m very proud of everyone out there today,” said senior Olivia Ryan. “I think everyone fought really well in both singles and doubles and it was super nice to be outside. It’s always a bit tough coming out here for the first match but I think that everyone did great. Looking forward to doing it again on Sunday.” 

DOUBLES  

Penn State collected the doubles point with wins on court one and two. 

At No. 2, doubles pairing Gabby O’Gorman and Alexandra Nielsen collected a 6-3 win over Rutger’s Sydney Kaplan and Minchae Kim. Rutgers earned the equalizer on court three when Deanna Lasorda and Karly Friedland lost 6-4 to Daira Cardenas and Jackeline Lopez. 

Clinching the doubles point for the Nittany Lions, Oliva Ryan and Yvonne Zuffova earned a hardfought 7-6 victory opposite Tess Fisher and Alisa Prinyarux. They won the tiebreaker 7-5.  

SINGLES 

Victories on courts one, two, three, and three secured the match for the Nittany Lions. 

O’Gorman grabbed Penn State’s first singles point in a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Lopez. Zuffova followed up with a 7-6, 6-4 victory against Rutger’s Fisher. On court three, Karly Friedland completed the comeback to clinch the match for the Nittany Lions in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 result.
