USC Women’s Tennis Continues Play at ITA All-American Championships

Women’s Tennis | September 26, 2024

CARY, N.C. – USC women’s tennis senior Grace Piper was electric on court today, Thurs., Sept. 26, as she won her singles round of 32 match and advanced to the doubles quarterfinals with her partner Lily Fairclough during the sixth day of competition at the ITA All-American Championships.

No. 36 ranked Piper downed No. 45 ranked Lily Jones of Michigan on Thursday, beating the Wolverine in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the singles round of 16. Tomorrow, Piper will face Tennessee’s Elza Tomase at 7:00 a.m. PST. Should Piper beat Tomase, she’ll punch her ticket into the NCAA Singles Championships in November.

Later in the day, Piper and her partner Fairclough powered past the No. 2 seed in the tournament, beating UVA’s No. 3 ranked duo of Melodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky in a three-set thrilled. USC lost the first set but bounced back in the second and followed it up by winning the tiebreak to take the match 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 [10-7]. Tomorrow, the USC duo will face Florida International’s No. 5 seeded duo of Oyinlomo Quadre and Katerina Mandelikova (ranked No. 6).

Trojan sophomore Immi Haddad lost her first singles match at ITA’s on Thursday, falling in the main draw round of 32 to Old Dominion’s Sofia Johnson 6-2, 6-1. Prior to today, Haddad had won six-straight singles matches to advance out of prequalifying play, into qualifying and finally into the second round of the main draw.  Haddad still has an opportunity to earn a bid into NCAA’s should the Trojan reach the consolation finals.

After dropping her singles main draw opening match yesterday, junior Emma Charney rebounded in the first round of consolation play to take her match 6-0, 6-1 over Oklahoma’s Chloe Noel. Charney continues play tomorrow in the back draw, with her eyes fixed on a spot in the finals, which would guarantee an NCAA bid.
