Previously On – Last spring, Arizona hosted both Texas and Baylor at home where they put up a historic win against the Longhorns but lost to the Bears. This spring the Wildcats got swept by Texas in the ITA Kickoff Regional championship match, losing the doubles point and every singles match. Against the Bears in March 2022, the Wildcats dropped the doubles point and only won two singles matches, courtesy of Gustaf Strom (def. Soto 6-2, 6-2) and Herman Hoeyeraal (def. Bass 6-1, 6-3). The doubles point is absolutely essential in both of these upcoming matches.

ITA Ranks – In the last ITA Coaches Poll, Arizona moved down one spot from #17 to #18. Both of their opponents shifted one spot as well: #10 Baylor (prev. #11) and #7 Texas (prev. #6). As for singles, five Wildcats remain ranked in the Top 125: #22 Jonas Ziverts, #78 Colton Smith, #85 Nick Lagaev, #98 Herman Hoeyeraal and #120 Jay Friend. Representing the Bears in the latest ITA ranks is #44 Jake Finn Bass, #117 Tadeas Paroulek, #125 Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi and #9 doubles pair Bass/Grassi Mazzuchi. Texas has the #1 ranked player Eliot Spizzirri and five others: #25 Siem Woldeab, #33 Pierre-Yves Bailly, #65 Micah Braswell, #112 Cleeve Harper and #113 Eshan Talluri. The Longhorns have the fourth-ranked doubles pair between Spizzirri and Harper.

Looking Ahead – After their trip to Texas, Men’s Tennis will recover and rejuvenate during a bye week before getting back on the road to Montgomery, Ala. for the Blue Gray tournament on Saturday, Feb. 25 and Sunday, Feb. 26. Then they are home again for a doubleheader against NAU and Gonzaga on Friday, March 3.
